Thought #1 - Ten minutes for myself

The closer we get to Christmas, the less time we seem to have for the most important person: ourselves! It took me decades to realize that not only do I have the right to put myself first, but it’s actually my duty to do so if I intend to keep my sanity. This includes my mental, emotional, and physical health. How are we supposed to find the time to take care of all these areas, though, especially in the weeks leading up to Christmas? Well, one step at a time. If you think you’ll need to carve out two hours of your already packed schedule, my answer will disappoint and (hopefully) encourage you. All it takes is 10 minutes of your precious time. Do you think you can take 10 minutes out of your busy schedule once a week? How about twice or, ideally, three to five times a week?

Why don’t we start with one day a week? If you stick with the one-day option, I guarantee you’ll quickly want more, and these 10-minute “me-sessions” will have a lasting effect on your mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. So are you up for a challenge?

How about you go home after work today and take 10 minutes for only yourself before you do anything else for anybody else? When you get home, go straight to your room, turn off your cell phone, take off your office/work clothing, slip into something comfy, close the blinds, and lie down. Cuddle up in your favorite blanket, rest your head on a soft pillow, close your eyes, and relax every muscle in your body. Just lie there with your eyes open or closed (whichever you prefer), take a few deep breaths, and wait for the thoughts that come to your mind. Just observe, don’t judge, and watch them disappear. Feel the warmth and softness of your blanket and how good it feels not having to use any part of your body. Just relax and breathe.

Did you know? There’s science behind why cuddling up with a blanket is good for you: when we wrap ourselves in a soft blanket, our bodies release oxytocin, the “love hormone”. If oxytocin is released, you instantly feel safe and calm. Also, being covered up conveys a feeling of being protected and comforted, which in turn triggers our relaxation response.

My moment of gratitude: Today I am so grateful to be living in my cozy house with a comfortable bed, clean bedding, and this huge variety of fluffy blankets. Not sure what makes me happier: feeling the warm and fluffy blanket on my skin or being able to fully let go of all the stress I’ve accumulated throughout the day. I am truly blessed!
